BMW Ignition Coil Update:

With the Bosch redesign of the BMW ignition coil come a few points that need to be addressed.

Bosch has replaced BMW part number 12131712219/(Bosch 00124) with BMW part number 12138647689/(Bosch 0221504470).The difference between these two ignition coils is the way they attach to the spark plug. With the old part number (Bosch 0221504464) you would hear an audible click during installation. This click is attributed to the ignition coil gripping the spark plug tip through a collar. Using the new part number (Bosch 0221504470) this audible click is now gone because the ignition coil attaches to the spark plug tip through the use of a contact spring. 

The new design of the Bosch coil has been used as an original equipment part for many years with no problems or performance issues. The original coils can be replaced with the updated version and still retain complete factory performance.

Eldor the New BMW Ignition Coil Supplier: Starting in early 2016 Eldor became the ignition coil supplier to BMW, replacing Bosch. BMW part number 12138657273, manufactured by Eldor, now replaces Bosch 12138647689 and Delphi 12138616153. What this means is if you remove a Bosch ignition coil from your vehicle for replacement and go to the dealer to order Bosch 12138647689, they will sell you Eldor 12138657273. And the same for the Delphi ignition coil. While many purists may choose to replace all of the coils with the same brand there is certainly no harm in only replacing the defective Bosch or Delphi coil with an Eldor coil.
